Aims, contents and method of the course

This lecture series will provide an introductory overview of the history of the Near East from the beginning of its Christian era in the fourth century, to the aftermath of the fall of the Armeno-Frankish kingdom of Cilicia in the fourteenth. Students will be introduced to the 'national' historical narratives of Armenia, Georgia, Syria and Byzantium. The lectures will take a comparative approach, focusing on the interaction between these groups and their neighbours.

* The Near East in 300 AD
* Christianisation and competition in the fifth and sixth centuries
* The seventh century and the rise of Islam
* Communal identities and blurring of boundaries
* Heterodoxy and syncretism on the eastern frontier, 8th and 9th centuries
* Travel and pilgrimage
* The tenth-century resurgence of Christianity
* The impact of the Crusades
* Approaches to Eastern Christian historiography
* Commerce and trade in the Near East
* Eastern invasions and the fragmentation of Anatolia, 11th-13th centuries
* Life as a minority: Christians in the Muslim Near East

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment will be by written examination at the end of the course. Key readings for the lecture topics will be provided each week in the course Moodle.
