Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Letters are not only, as an ancient topos suggests, 'conversations between the absent.' They are also an exceedingly complex and multifaceted genre of text, whose dimensions, ranging from literary ambition to pragmatic function and material condition, open up a wide field for cultural studies approaches. But what does this mean for the digital engagement with letters and correspondence, including contemporary forms of electronic communication? - This course addresses these questions by focusing on ongoing digital research projects, particularly those related to correspondences of the (European) early modern and modern periods.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students will have to submit a series of assignments (3-4; 50%), part of which will be leading to the final project (50%). The projects will be individually negotiated according to the students' interests, and should ideally contain at least one digital component (data or code).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
