Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Goals: The central issue of the seminar is how the relationships of politics and science are renegotiated in times of political regime changes. A guiding assumption is that BOTH politics AND science becoming "moving targets" in such periods of transition.
This question will be considered on the basis of spceific examples, including the French Revolution, the Revolutions of 1848, the Russian Revolution of 1917, the transition from Empire to republic in German and Austria beginning in 1918, the Nazi takeover of power in Germany 1933 and in Austria 1938, the rise of new states and political regimes after 1945, and last not least the fundamental shifts in science policy and the politics of science in the context of German unification 1990.
Method: Common discussion of selected primary and secondary sources, led by student participants.
