Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course is a complement to the VO "Further Historical Approaches: The Christian Near East", and it is strongly recommended that students attend those lectures as well.
Students will be introduced to a wide range of translated source material for the history of the Near East, from the beginning of its Christian era in the 4th century up to the Mongol invasions of the 13th century. The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the peculiarities of the different historiographical traditions in the Near East, and to offer practice in comparative source analysis. This is done through a series of Reacting to the Past roleplaying games which serve as ‘case-studies’ in crucial moments in the history of the period.

Assessment and permitted materials

Reacting to the Past is an active-learning pedagogy that requires student involvement in each simulation, that includes both written and oral arguments.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Each game is assessed on both oral participation (35%) and written papers (65%) with the possibility for bonus points.

Examination topics

There is no final examination in this course

Reading list

The readings for each game can be found on Moodle.
