Kakania in transformation: State, Politics and Society in the Habsburg monarchy, 1849-1914
Continuous assessment of course work
Labels
The second half of the 19th century was a period of change and transformation. Politics, society and culture developed within a highly contested political field - between internationalism and nationalism, between monarchical prerogative and liberal constitutional state, between secularization and political Catholicism, and between claims to great power status and regional policy making, to name but a few. The discussion in the seminar will cast a cultural studies perspective at politics, society, and state in order to provide additional insight into state-building, the political role of the monarch, the reorganization of the administration as well as the importance of the media and the public for political processes.
