Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Offers several themes within which the student can write a Seminar paper: courtly love, crusade and kingship, mission and saintliness, urban history.
Assessment and permitted materials
3 short source analyses, 3 short presentations, a first version of the term paper, which must be improved into a final version. We discuss in class in German, but the smaller papers, the presentations, and the semianr papers can be written in English, German, or French.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Participation, presence in all sessions, the 2 versions of the Seminar paper.
Examination topics
Seminars do not come with exams
Reading list
The core readings will be on Moodle. Likely: Chrétien, Érec and Énide; Jean, Lord of Joinville, Life of Saint Louis; several authors, Lives of Otto of Bamberg; Journal of Philippe de Vigneulles. Pending approval of the instructor, the students can write their final paper using other primary sources.
