Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture starts with Eric J. Hobsbawm from the assumption that the "long 19th century" includes the phase between the French Revolution and the First World War. It was the age of great political ideologies, mass migrations and scientific and technological promises as well as the first wave of economic and communicative globalization. The rise of nationalism and the imperial expansion of Europe already pointed to the crisis of the turn of the century, which culminated in the epochal break of the First World War.
The lecture portrays the "long 19th century" as the beginning of the prehistory of the present. But she also emphasizes the fascinating alterity of an epoch that appears to us today as “a world from yesterday”.

The course pursues the goal of promoting the students' ability to reflect on lines of development and exemplary selected topics of the history of the long 19th century from a European and global perspective.

The topic-specific lecture units are each supplemented by accompanying
Media (image and text material, tables, video sequences) are supported as part of a PP presentation. At the beginning of a course unit, the students are given the opportunity to ask the lecturer questions.

Assessment and permitted materials

As part of an exam, the students write an essay on a partial aspect that was discussed in the lecture; they define key terms in the history of the "long" 19th century and interpret a contemporary picture source.

To prepare for the exam, students are provided with the image material presented by the lecturer as part of the PPP.
