Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Reading, writing (with instructor feedback), and engaged and constructive in-class discussion. The final paper will be primary-source focused. Papers can be written in German or English; discussion can be bilingual. Students will learn how to revise and improve a draft, an important skill in life. Lots of work -- but this is the final seminar in the BA and worth 8-9 ECTs, so many hours of sweat)!
The topic: internal conflicts among Western and Central Europeans in the Middle Ages, be they more religious in tenor (inner crusades such as the Albigensian Crusade & the Hussite Wars) or more political and social (including urban rebellions) .

Assessment and permitted materials

All assignments have to be completed, and handed in time, or the student gets a failing grade. They should be sent to me electronically before the due date, and with CC to yourself for safety (if you do not receive your own email to me with the paper attached, there is likely a problem, and you should try again).
The assignments are all contributing to the final grade (0-100 points, a pass is 51 points and above):
3 short papers (2 pages) for 5 % of the points each (0-15 points) due the Sunday morning before class
1 close reading of a passage in the core primary source chosen for the seminar paper for 10% of the points (0-10 points)
1 commentary (written and oral) of a classmate´s first version (Erstfassung) of the seminar paper for 15% (0-15 points) 1 first version of the seminar paper for 25% of the points (0-25 points)
1 final version of the seminar paper for 35% of the points (0-35 points).
If the final version is superior to the first version, the points given for the first version will be increased. If the final version represents no improvement (or is worse than the first version) it will be graded harshly.
Extra points will be given for class participation (engaged, to the point, polite and firm).
