On the 01.12 and 15.12 the course will take place online. Information on how to participate are available on Moodle.05.01.2022 UPDATE:
On the 12.01 and 26.01 the course will take place online. Information on how to participate are available on Moodle.ContentIn this course, students learn about exemplarily selected topics of subject-oriented civic education that are relevant for the teaching practice of civic education in order to build up a fundamental basic knowledge about democracy, politics and society. One important area here is the media. The media landscape has a strategic role to play amongst the actors who shape narratives of citizenship. Whether media actors unintentionally release mistaken information (misinformation) or with the intent to deceive (disinformation), the negative impact on citizens and democracies cannot be neglected. The topic of quality of information is therefore of great concern for future teachers.
But how does the notion of quality of information and media relate to inclusive citizenship education? And how can these notions be included in teaching practices?
The course will attempt to answer these questions while developing content and pedagogical knowledge of students.
At the end of the course, students are expected to:
• Have a general understanding of subject-oriented civic education and selected focal points
• Know how to critically reflect upon the notion of citizenship in relation to inclusion and exclusion dynamics.
• Be able to critically assess the credibility and reliability of sources of data, information and digital content about migration in relation to relevant scientific literature.
• Apply a variety of referencing and attribution practices.
• Apply different communication strategies for different discussion situations (On/Offline, Social Media…).
• Create lesson plans for the analysis of media articles and on the topic of migration.Due to the pandemic situation, the course will be held hybrid or digitally, if necessary.MethodologyThis course is designed on active education and student-centred methodologies. Therefore, students’ active participation is required.
The course will involve communication exercises, presentations, readings and group discussions.
