Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of this guided-reading is to propose an overview of the European political cultures and thoughts of the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, particularly focussing on a crucial political and cultural phenomenon of the second half of the Middle Ages: the creation of dynastic states. Throughout a selection of source materials, methodological texts and case studies, we will examine different fundamental phenomenon that characterised the shaping of dynastic states in Europe as well as counter-models (Empire, city Republics) and oppositions. The introduction (Monday 14 March) will focus on critical theories that helps at understanding the dynastic state of cultural phenomena such as, among others, the concepts ‘Civilisation’ (Elias), ‘Distinction’, ‘Habitus’ and ‘Field’ (Bourdieu) or (cultural) ‘Hegemony’ (Gramsci). Thereafter, each week, the participants will have to produce an essay (2 p. max.) synthetizing the content of a specific source or a scientific article dealing with one particular aspect of the topic. Each text will be commented and discussed together the week after.

Assessment and permitted materials

-Attendance to the course and participation (oral intervention): 25% of the final mark.
-Writing weekly essays (2 pages maximum): 50% of the final mark.
-Synthetizing and reworking the best 3 essays (8-10 pages maximum): 25% of the final mark.
