Medieval kings and queens, clerics and knights, merchants and peasants, monks and nuns, cathedrals and universities live on in modern memory, for better and worse. Europe was for centuries Rome’s poorest heir, less economically complex, less connected to the wider world, and demographically thinner than its sibling cultures of Byzantium and Islam. But after 1000, things began to change. Europe’s populations expanded, its economy grew and specialized, and its inhabitants pressed aggressively into the lands of their neighbors. After a series of crises in the fourteenth century — climate change, war, plague — came a period of global expansion and cultural confidence. By the 1500s, as Europeans experimented with new ways of organizing religion, knowledge, politics, economics, and family life, they began spread across the wider world.
By the end of the course, you will possess a solid grasp of important events, developments, and individuals in this period of European history. You will be in a position to contextualize literature, art, music, material culture, and architecture from this setting, and you will be better situation to expand your knowledge about it.
