Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The Mughal emperor Akbar’s regime (1556-1605), whose name means the ‘great’, was reflective of innovative administrative and religious reforms, diverse artistic and literary traditions and expansive global connections. In the research seminar he and his empire are put into a global perspective so as to assess both the peculiarity of this reign and India’s cross-cultural entanglement in early modern times. Students who are interested in comparisons between India and Europe in Akbar’s time are especially welcome. His multi-racial bureaucracy, multi-religious interactions and unique concept of kingship, distinguished his reign greatly from his predecessors. This course opens a panorama of topics like courtly culture, composition of nobility, coexistence of religions, representation of the emperor in court chronicles and regional literature, foreign connections with Central Asia and Europe. By putting India into an international context we will try to decipher different paths Eurasian regions have taken towards Early Modernity.

Assessment and permitted materials

Marking will be on the basis of the evaluation of the participation of the students in the discussion, of their oral presentation and of the final paper of roughly 65.000 characters.
