Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This lecture class looks at the constitution and administration of the Habsburg Monarchy and its successor states. For the period after 1918, the focus will be on developments in the territory of present-day Austria.
The focus will be on the transformation of statehood in interaction with social, economic, and political developments. In this context, the lecture class will place new research on the history of state, politics and administration in a dialogue with Austrian history. Was the Habsburg Monarchy, as a multi-ethnic state, disadvantaged in comparison to the European states, which it understood as nation states? How did the expansion of statehood and political integration in the Monarchy and in the other European states take place? How did the successor states cope with the challenge of asserting themselves in a completely new political and international field?
