Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
A survey of different source genres and issues covering ca. 300 to ca. 1500 C.E. The issues have been chosen for their variety, so as to accompany the lecture classes that cover the same period. We shall read and analyze, for example, martyrdom stories, documents about Constantine, the Beowulf, the old French Song of Roland, and courtly romances.
Assessment and permitted materials
Regular writing (about 9 2-page papers for 90% of the grade) and constructive participation in the class discussion (15%) for a total of 105 points. The 105 instead of 100 is meant to reward discussion. Under 51/100 points is a fail (5), 51-62,5 is a 4, 63-74,5 is a 3, 75-87,5 is a 4, 88-105/100 is a 1 (A).
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Do not skip sessions; this is not a lecture class. Participation is critically important to progress.
Examination topics
The readings will be on Moodle. The course aims at teaching students to read and analyze independently of existing master narratives, so I discourage reliance on secondaries.
