Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

A survey of different source genres and issues covering ca. 300 to ca. 1500 C.E. The issues have been chosen for their variety, so as to accompany the lecture classes that cover the same period. We shall read and analyze, for example, martyrdom stories, documents about Constantine, the epic Beowulf, the old French Song of Roland, courtly romances, and inquisition records.
This class complements my survey lecture class (Überblick Mittelalter, taught in the Sommersemester). But this combination is not necessary to get a good grade in this guided reading, and learn from it.

Assessment and permitted materials

See below
The class is meant to teach to read (mostly primary sources) and think about these independently of grand master narratives or textbooks. So you have to read, write, discuss.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Do not skip sessions; this is not a lecture class. Participation is critically important to progress.
Regular writing ( 9 2-page papers for 90% of the grade, in German, English, or French) and constructive participation in the class discussion (15%) for a total of 105 points. The 105 instead of 100 is meant to reward discussion. Under 51/105 points is a fail (5), 51-62,5 is a 4, 63-74,5 is a 3, 75-87,5 is a 4, 88-105/105 is a 1 (A).

Examination topics

Exams are not allowed for GRs; neither are big presentations. see https://www.univie.ac.at/geschichte/studienplan-wiki/index.php?title=Pflichtmodul_Vertiefung

Reading list

The readings posted on Moodle.
I do not recommend using secondary literature (it will not help, to the contrary), but the best English-language textbook is Blockmans and Hoppenbrouwers, https://ebookcentral-proquest-com.uaccess.univie.ac.at/lib/univie/detail.action?docID=1613798
