Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The purpose of the course is a critical rethinking of the social phenomenon, which is considered a central event in European history - the transition from the traditional to the modern world. The main emphasis is made on transformation the major social structures (family, city, nation, generation) and phenomena (war, revolution), as well as the articulation and reflection of these changes in identities, values ??and myths. The task of the course is also to get acquainted with the most important academic discussions on these topics. Each topic is discussed within the specific historical and cultural context of Eastern Europe.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students are supposed to participate in each class meeting. Only two class meetings may be omitted but then the omitted topics should be discussed with the professor during his office hours.
Assessment will be based on clarity of arguments and knowledge of literature assigned to the course

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

1) class discussion (40 %)
2) "take home" exam (60%)

Examination topics

Students will be asked to choose any topic from their current interests and to write a paper (up to 10 pages) on how it is related to the issues raised in the course. Alternatively, they may write of history of their family (minimum three generations) with a focus on the issues raised in the course.
