Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course seeks to move away from the ‘clash of civilizations’ paradigm and go beyond history writing from a statist point of view. Building on the recent scholarship that questions the centrality of borders, state structures, and modes of governance in early modern history, it will engage more closely with the concept of ‘entangled history’ and will shift the focus to the continuous interactions and negotiations among various agents. Examining the interconnectedness between opposing political entities and religions, the course will introduce various actors in the Habsburg-Ottoman space in the early modern period who transcended political, ethnic, and religious boundaries. It will discuss different encounters, modes of communication, and cultural exchange via actors and practices, such as trans-imperial subjects, renegades, refugees, slaves, and gift exchanges. The relevant secondary literature readings will introduce the students to the range of historiographical and theoretical debates in the field, while the primary source readings will provoke a critical understanding of a range of historical sources that relate to these debates.

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular attendance and active involvement in discussions in class, based on the weekly assigned readings (primary sources and secondary literature), are essential. Students will be asked to formulate three questions that must encourage discussion in class. In addition, each student is expected to do one oral presentation in class on a selected primary source or secondary literature and submit three short critical essays (response papers, 1-2 pages max.), related to the main themes examined in the literature the course.
Note: The instruction and course assignments will be in English. Students’ good command of English is expected.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The final grade consists of the following components:
- Regular attendance (max. two absences) and participation in discussions in class (20%)
- Formulation of discussion questions (10%)
- Oral presentation (20%)
- Short written assignments (50%)
