Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The course aims to cross the boundaries of national history and situate the history of Bulgaria within a broader European and Mediterranean framework. Focusing on several key themes in Bulgaria’s history, it offers a critical perspective reassessing dominant narratives to date. The course is organized around the analysis of central scholarly publications and reading a selection of key primary sources related to the topic.
Assessment and permitted materials
Regular attendance and active in-class participation based on the assigned reading material (secondary literature or primary sources) are required. In addition, one oral presentation and submission of a final seminar paper are also mandatory. Students will be guided in during the semester towards a suitable topic, composition, theoretical framework, and methodology of the seminar paper.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The submission of a final seminar paper is mandatory. The final grade consists of the following components:
- Regular attendance and participation in discussions (30%)
- Oral presentation (20%)
- Final seminar paper (50%)

Examination topics
This course has no final exam. Student evaluation and the final grade are based on the assignments during the semester
