Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The emergence and consolidation of capitalism over the past 500 years has transformed rural areas all over the globe. Providing the metropolitan centres of the world with raw materials and foodstuffs, the ‘global countryside’ (Sven Beckert, 2014) experienced a rapid transformation. The production of sugar, cotton, soy, jute and indigo, among others, has not only recast the natural environment, but also the people’s relationship to their environment. This process has come to be understood as that of shifting ‘commodity frontiers’. Researching commodity frontiers and how they relate to social, economic, political and ecological change has recently developed into a lively academic field. The ‘Commodity Frontiers Initiative’ (CFI), based in Harvard, Ghent and Amsterdam, is spearheading this research approach. This seminar builds mainly upon recent contributions coming from this field of research.
