The courses "seminar - structures of the (early) modern health care system in the Habsburg countries" and the research seminar of the same name will take place every other week and ideally should be combined. The seminar can be counted as a "Projektkurs". Both courses can also be taken separately. The visit to the University Archives is scheduled for a Thursday, starting at 16.45, however this will be organised in accordance with the students. This visit replaces a meeting of one of the both courses. The papers of the invited lecturers of Eötvös Lorànd University Budapest and Charles University Prague will be held according to their possibilities at meetings of both courses. For any questions please get in touch: sonia.horn@univie.ac.at

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The analysis of health care structures in the Habsburg countries covers a wide range of topics. Research questions may include topics like the access to medical assistance offered by various more or less formally trained medical professionals, e.g. analyzing their education and the development of administrative frameworks,. Discussing political, economic, social and cultural backgrounds in dealing with health and sickness e.g. by questioning which therapies were available, how medical knowledge was produced and finally recognized could be considered as well as measures of health care politics, like handling epidemics or ways coping with health, sickness, birth and dying, for example at regional levels. This means that a broad variety of topics can be investigated.
The history of medicine was defined by topoi that were based on constructions of 19th century historiography and often served specific interests of that era. This is especially true for the history of medicine. The analysis of primary sources usually offers a different situation than the “story” described in traditional medical historiography. It is therefore necessary to work with primary sources. This is the main focus of the course.

The aim of the course (s) is to instruct the students how to carry out research based on primary sources. Therefore a visit to the University Archives will be organised as well as lectures given by colleagues from Eötvös Lorànd University Budapest and Charles University Prague. This should support the implementation of a guided, but independently completed research project.

Assessment and permitted materials

Ideally, the courses "Research Seminar" and "Seminar" should be combined, however the "Seminar" can be credited as a “Projektkurs”. The investigations based on primary sources should be carried out within the research seminar, the analysis and the presentation of the results should be part of the "seminar" (= Projektkurs). However, each course can be completed separately. In this case, the deliveries will be agreed individually.
