Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
International Life in the 20th century and the process of European IntegrationThis class discusses the prehistory and early history of the European Integration as a crucial aspect of 20th century European History. To introduce the contingent and path dependent character of the integration process, we will start our discussion with the internationalist movement of the 19th century. The focus of the class will be on the institutional and political integration projects of the interwar period. This part will be followed by a brief introduction of the NS-projects for Europe and the plans of the european resistance for the rebuilding of Europe. The last part of the class will deal with the integration projects of the immediate postwar years and their realization.
Assessment and permitted materials
Active participation in the discussions, written exam at the end.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Introduction to the scholarly debate about the process of European Integration from a historical-comparative perspective. During the discussion of the various stages of the integration process, I will introduce the class to the most commonly used theoretical concepts and the most relevant secondary sources. The class should finally also provide the basis for a critical engagement with the current debate on the European integration process.
Examination topics
The class is an integrated form of lecture and discussion with students. To allow students a competent engagement in the discussion, readings will be provided for each session.
