Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This seminar course pays particular attention to the change of relation between China and the outside world during the 100 years. Starts with two introduction sections of a brief sketch of modern Chinese history and an explanation of traditional Chinese view of the world. Seminars explore how China was forced to open its door to the outside world; the reaction of intellectuals, the intellectual trends of westernization and its counteraction; modern Chinese nationalism; and a case study of Shanghai as a globalized city.
