Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture presents concepts and theories concerning the new research paradigm "visual history" by focussing on photomechanical medias and their genuin relation to an "outer reality" (Siegfried Kracauer). Analyzes center around so called "ephemeral" photography and film (e.g. amateurism, documentarism, news reel). Those mainly non-narrative artefacts save a surplus of information on past events that relates them in a double way to historiography: they are open to recurrent processes of interpretation similar to the quality of documents within modern historiography. And they point to voids within the realm of written documents (e.g. elements of everyday life; mentalities) that generate counter-narratives (Marc Ferro) to traditional historiographical positions.

Assessment and permitted materials

class exam

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The lecture aims to transfer basic theoretical and practical knowledge needed to analyze and interpret audiovisual sources. It serves as an introduction into the new research fields of "visual history" and the "pictorial turn".

Examination topics

The lecture offers two approaches to it´s topic. Concepts and theories will be presented within a "classical" style of lecturing, supported by multimedia. Case studies alongside selected ephemeral films inform on research strategies in the field of cultural history and the archival sciences.
