Aims, contents and method of the course

Massacre in Jerusalem (1099): The First Crusade.

Based on the contemporary sources, the course will explore whether the bloodbath that took place on July 15th and 16th 1099 was motivated by religious ideology or by circumstances and conjuncture. We shall use Latin sources with English translations (there are often German translations too). Knowledge of Latin useful but not absolutely necessary if English or German is available to read the sources.

Assessment and permitted materials

Two written assignments (the second including a draft, to be reworked into a final version), instead of a final exam; vigorous engagement in the discussion every week.
