Topics, Theory Approach, Methods. Discussion of topics and themes for papers and excursions. Students prepare concepts for papers, due March 22.
March 24, 2011, 10-14: Workshop 2
Discussion of Concepts. First ideas for excursions: resource persons, places to be visited. Students prepare papers and presentation (hand out), excursion proposal inclusive, due May 3.

Assessment and permitted materials

Aspects to be included in each topic:
History / Time (historical periods, processes, and developments)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course aims at introducing Austrian and international students in a cooperative investigation into Viennas social and cultural variety, which was and still is to a high degree shaped be the constraints of the labour market. The research will therefore focus on specific economic sectors with a high participation of migrant workers.

Examination topics

This course consists of two parts, course and excursion. Both parts form a unit and can only be attended together. We will start with theoretical reflections, then go into investigations into the general topic, which will be presented at a workshop. Students will work in groups on selected topics, connected with the excursion programme, planned by the students working groups.
In the second part we proceed to the excursion part of the course, containing 6 half-day excursions with visits of sites, work-places, institutions, interviews and meetings of all types of persons involved. This course requires high commitment from the participants. General topic: Exploring Viennas role in the global economy in a historical long-term perspective focusing at work-places and labour-market.
