Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Der Kurs wird in englischer Sprache gehalten und behandelt kriegerische Auseinandersetzungen auf der Insel Irland von den frühesten Zeiten bis in die 1990er Jahre. Mündliche sowie schriftliche Beiträge der StudentInnen können entweder auf deutsch oder auf englisch erfolgen. Allerdings ist die Bereitschaft, englische Texte zu lesen, Voraussetzung für die Teilnahme am Kurs. Nach 3-4 Einleitungsreferaten vom Kursleiter folgen mündliche Referate seitens der StudentInnen, die in schriftlicher Form später abgegeben werden müssen.
Folgende Schwerpunkte bilden den Rahmen der Themensetzung:
a) Warfare in ancient Ireland. What the sagas tell us.
b) Viking incursions and the Irish response.
c) Military campaigns of the Normans
d) The wars of conquest under Mary and Elisabeth
e) The English Civil War and Ireland: Cromwell's Campaign.
f) The 'War of the two Kings', 1689-91.
g) Irishmen in foreign armies, 1600-1918
h) The French Revolution and the 1798 Uprising.
i) Punishment of the 1798 rebels
j) The 1916 Rebellion.
k) Guerrilla Warfare 1919-21 in Cork
l) Guerrilla Warfare 1919-21 outside Cork
m) War of the intelligence services 1919-21.
n) British atrocities in Ireland, 1919-21
o) The Treaty negotiations and debates, 1921-22
p) The Irish Civil War 1922-23.
q) Irish Neutrality during World War 2
r) German Espionage in Ireland, 1937-45
s) Irishmen in the British armed forces, World War One
t) Irishmen in the British Armed Forces, World War Two
u) Changing IRA and British Army tactics in Northern Ireland, 1969-1998.
