Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Oskar Kokoschka is considered one of the most versatile and multifaceted Austrian artists of the 20th century. His work ranges from fine and applied art to important stage designs, literary contributions, and political expressions. Kokoschka was also a teacher, networker, and thought leader of a new Europe. His insight from the horrors of World War I led to a lifelong commitment to peace. The establishment of the "School of Seeing" summer academy stands as an international meeting and creative space, serving as a committed counterpart to national art academies.
Kokoschka's artistic career spans eight decades, covering a large part of the 20th century. His influence on European art history is central, his appearance and legacy lead from the “Oberwildling” of the early years to the late work of the self-confessed European, which continues to inspire expressive-figurative painting up to this day.

This course examines Kokoschka in his holistic role as an expressionist artis, set designer, and author, but above all as an immensely political figure of the 20th century who inspired various generations of artists. In addition to presentations and discussions on specialized topics at the University, the course benefits from the rich collection of Kokoschka's works in Viennese museums (Belvedere, Leopold Museum, MAK, Albertina, Vienna Museum), providing opportunities for on-site learning experiences with the artist's original works.
