Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Demography has been understood - in its Malthusian variant - as a sort of "natural science". However, mating, rearing children, ageing, health or illness, and finally death are culturally determined. Most demographers of our time have grasped this essential point.
We will discuss population structure and history since the very beginnings of human development until our time, looking also into a probale future. This will demonstrate the social and cultural features of these processes. Part of them is the dominant discourse on demography relating to migration, demographic ageing and its problems (care; fiscal questions; voluntary leaving, ...).

Assessment and permitted materials

3 pieces of researches mentioned above
At the end of the semszer there will be a short exam (in written form)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Demography is to be seen as the basis for social prospect and political planning as well as the fundaments of an understanding of society.

Examination topics

Information in compact form is offered by the lecturer. It is supposed that students collaborate by a series of easily performed tiny studies (f. i. researching the population numbers of teh communes of origin; interpreting a church-yard's spatial structure; ...).
