Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Goals: The seminar wants to introduce you to research less "on" sound but "through" sound. Finding your thematic fields and choosing the appropriate medium of presentation (writing, recording), is part of the overall task that will hone your perceptual capacities and practice of cultural analysis.
Content: Urban soundscapes are an expression of an urban culture that comprises aesthetic and technological features. They either enhance or contradict the visual logic of urban society and its practices, and they call strongly for the application of an aesthetics of engagement (Berleant). Urban sound as perceived can be approached in its historical variability; this will need a honed source critique. It can be approached by actual perception; this requires a honed awareness and methodology adapted to sensory practices. It can also be investigated as structuring spatial segments where sound practices constitute dynamic "identities" that differ from static architectural beacons. The special conditions of sound milieus invite unconventional formats of your term papers that can also be sound files or class excursions to your "field".
Methods: Introductory lessons by the teacher. Course language, including presentations and excursions is English, papers can be delivered in other languages.
