Aims, contents and method of the course

This lecture offers an introduction to the history of (European) art from the mid-18th century to the present. The following topics will be discussed in conjunction with relevant research literature: the formation of the modern art system (art exhibition and art museum); 18th century painting: genre issues, reception aesthetics, institutional context (Chardin, Greuze, Hogarth...); art in the age of the French Revolution (David, Blake, Goya and others); landscape painting of the Romantic period in Germany and England (Runge, Friedrich, Turner, Constable and others).); history painting and politics in France (from David to Manet); from the 'painting of modern life' to Cézanne (Manet, Cassatt, Monet, Seurat, Cézanne); Rodin and sculpture of the 19th century; and many others. The history of institutional critique from Marcel Duchamp to the present; artwork and commodity form - abstract painting and minimal art; the dissolution of traditional genres and the emergence of (post-)conceptual art; from the Black Square to post-Soviet contemporary art; memory, mourning and appropriation: art under 'postmodern'; bad painting - good art; at the transition to 'life': spectres of use value in the art of the 20th and 21st centuries.
The lecture is accompanied by an optional tutorial, which also covers the required readings. The dates will be announced later.

Assessment and permitted materials

- MC exam (depending on the situation on site or via Moodle)
- allowed aids: dictionaries (for non-native speakers)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

- for a positive grade, at least 50% of the points must be achieved.
- Grading scale:
87% to 100%: 1
75% to 86.99%: 2
63% to 74.99%: 3
50% to 62.99%: 4
0% to 49.99: 5

Examination topics

Content of the lectures plus reading assignments. The latter will be announced in due time.
