Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Considering the growing recognition of human entanglement with the world of the bee, and the dependence of agriculture, livelihoods, and environmental sustainability on it, the fear of honeybees’ losses has become one of the most important concerns for scholars, scientists, politicians, filmmakers, and many others. The course offers the opportunity to discuss the different theories and perspectives on the study of human and animals, with regard to human-bee relationships in research fields as human-animal studies and multispecies ethnography. The course questions how the current anthropological debate on Human-Animal Studies engages with the study of beekeeping, and it will try to answer the questions on ‘how’ and ‘if’ the multispecies theories can be used in the study of bee-human relation.
Thus, the provided literature and the lectures aim to encourage the students to develop a critical thinking on the different approaches about bees (and by extension other animals) in the general public, the media, the natural sciences, and the social sciences. During the course, attention will be given to the different ways of practicing beekeeping, from the more conventional beekeeping to the use of honeybees in Museums as a metaphor for social democracy.
Finally, the course introduces the question on how, in the context of European Union, the practice of beekeeping could be intertwined with broader questions of cultural politics of nature, landscape, and cultural heritage and identity matters.
