Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The case study takes a look at the art and architecture of the papal court during the so-called "Babylonian exile" in the 14th century. At that time, the papal court did not reside in Rome, but in Avignon in southern France. We will discuss which strategies of representation the papacy pursued here, and how the popes succeeded in continuing the traditions brought back from Rome or else in legitimizing their stay in Avignon with completely new motifs.
In Avignon, the popes concentrated the entire papal administration and the members of the papal court in Avignon and built a new palace for this purpose. The palace was soon so large and, moreover, so precious and diverse that it soon overshadowed their older residence at the Lateran. In addition, the cardinals outbid each other with commissions for increasingly expensive buildings and works of art. When the popes returned to Rome, the Avignon structure furthermore became the model for the new construction of the Vatican Palace.

Assessment and permitted materials

The case study will teach basic methods for the scientific analysis of individual works of art and buildings. Students will focus on the description and analysis of works of art and buildings, the research and critical reading of scientific literature, and the written (seminar paper) and oral presentation of their findings.
