In Avignon, the popes concentrated the entire papal administration and the members of the papal court in Avignon and built a new palace for this purpose. The palace was soon so large and, moreover, so precious and diverse that it soon overshadowed their older residence at the Lateran. In addition, the cardinals outbid each other with commissions for increasingly expensive buildings and works of art. When the popes returned to Rome, the Avignon structure furthermore became the model for the new construction of the Vatican Palace.
