Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course explores two central phenomena on the threshold between the medieval and early modern periods: the late medieval sacred space, which – filled with rich furnishings such as winged altarpieces, towering sacrament houses, and elaborate tomb monuments – is generally perceived as cluttered and chaotic; and the reformed sacred space as it emerged from the 1520s onwards, which is seen as a necessary call to order following the excesses of previous generations. Our seminars will take a critical approach to both interpretations, identifying regimes of order within the complex artistic ensembles of prereformation spaces, and addressing the surprising diversity of reformist approaches – ranging from a broad tolerance of traditional furnishings to the radical cleansing of the iconoclasts.
