Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The purpose of this lecture is to introduce students to the exciting but in its full range little-known profession of specialist museum planning, by showing selected examples of museum and exhibition projects.
At present, there is a worldwide trend to construct new museum buildings and modernize existing structures, often closely related to the reorganization of museum collections. However, there is a lack of specialists who not only have an interdisciplinary approach regarding exhibition contents but also an understanding of functional, technical and economic issues whilst also considering the visitors’ viewpoint. Thus, the course aims to present on a practical and theoretical level an internationally viable profession that is currently in strong demand.
Museological planners are generalists: their field of activity ranges from feasibility studies, content development, the expert support of architectural competitions and building projects to the curation of exhibitions and the project management involved in their implementation. At the same time, planners are required to take a holistic view on the projects and their contextual, political, social and economic environment.
In addition to offering an insight into the specialist areas of work, the course also addresses current issues and problems from the field of museological theory.
