Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In the 13th and 14th centuries, central Italy's city-states distinguished themselves by means of large and representative buildings and sophisticated pictorial programs. They were intended to adequately represent the city and its citizens while at the same time establish or preserve a shared urban identity. Religious and civil buildings as well as their decoration were planned by municipal commissions and executed hand in hand with leading architects and artists. Focusing on Florence as a case study, some of the most important buildings and pictorial programs of this city will be analyzed in terms of their identity-giving effect and their significance in representing the commune beyond the city' s borders. Students will receive an overview over the planning and organizing practices guiding the construction of public buildings towards the end of the Middle Ages, as well as the design and implementation of identity-forming and representative projects through Florentine communal commissions and the participating architects and artists.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance in seminars and tutorials, preparation of introductory texts, active participation in discussions and constructive feedback to the speakers.

Grading is based on the assessment of the performance in the case study and in the tutorial:
active participation (15%)
oral Presentation (30%)
written seminar paper (55%)

Examination topics

Basic methods for the scientific analysis of individual works of art and buildings will be developed. Students will focus on the description and analysis of works of art and buildings, the research and critical reading of scientific literature, and the written (seminar paper) and oral presentation of their findings.
