Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of this course is to analyze the early work of the artists of the Vienna Secession, specifically the unique product of their collective work: the Ver Sacrum. Through visual and historical analysis of published issues (1989-1903), we will explore the anatomy of a modern journal. Its creation, editorial history, readership, and its (premature) death. The course can be interpreted as a case study in the larger context of modern journals, particularly in terms of the unique function they played in defining the role of art at the turn of the century.
