Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This is an introductory course on Lyubov’ Popova and Varvara Stepanova, two major protagonists of the Russian and Soviet avant-garde, with a focus on visual/textual analysis, feminist, and social history of art.
Assessment and permitted materials
Over the course of the term you are going to make yourself familiar with and develop academic practices of art historical research. You are expected to use relevant research and writing skills in your final research paper. Your paper should include at least one extensive visual analysis, close (critical) readings of primary sources/secondary literature, and formally correct footnotes/appendix. Details will be discussed at the initial session.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Grades depend on your performance during the term (oral presentations, active participation in class discussions, home assignments) and the quality of your final research paper, which is due at the end of the term. In order complete the course with a positive result, your final research paper has to be assessed positively. The paper has to be clearly written with proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. If your native language is not German, please make sure that your paper is proof-read beforehand.
