Aims, contents and method of the course
The first part starts with the history of technology, the aspects of colour and methods for examination of works of art. Materials and technology for supports, priming, drawing, painting and varnish are following. Then application to history of art is given regarding the development of painting techniques as well as polychromies of sculpture from medieval time to 20th cent.
Assessment and permitted materials
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Works of art are basing on materials and their treatments which determine their presentation. The knowledge of both is undispensible for correct judgement of authenticity, age and alterations. These experiences can be useful tools for ongoing art historians in the fields of painting, sculpture and architectural surface.
Examination topics
Lectures with comparative illustrations are given, including presentations of samples of materials and demonstrations of techniques (f.e. gilding). One excursion in Vienna is planned for each part to perceive the relations of different materials and aspects and their various characters.- Written handouts are giving concentrated information on basic terms for materials and techniques.
