Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Due to the education policy (renovatio studii) of Charlemagne (747/48-814) numerous new scriptoria in the Frankish Empire developed. So far the manuscript production was in the hands of the monasteries, now court schools began to produce manuscripts for princely patronage. As part of the Carolingian Renaissance it came to a revival of ancient manner of painting. The oldest Carolingian "schools" were the palace school (Palastschule) and the court school (Hofschule) of Charlemagne. After the death of Charlemagne, the Carolingian book production shifted on scriptoria in Reims, Tours, Metz, St. Gallen, Reichenau and Fulda. In the north of the Frankish Empire the Frankish-AngloSaxon school developed. Die book illumination of this period is characterized by the combination of Christian-Roman, Byzantine and Germanic heritage. In this case study the various forms/schools of Carolingian Manuscript Illumination will be shown and further examined.
