Aims, contents and method of the course

The Cubism of Picasso and Braque of the years around 1910 is one of the most important turning points within the recent history of images. The 'experiments' of both artist have yielded paintings and collages that are among the most difficult to read and most fascinating works of art of the 20th century. The cubist break with the norm of perspectival representation has thus entailed a variety of highly diverging interpretations: An analysis and multi-faceted representation of a visual object? An affirmation of the flatness of the pictorial medium, nilly-willy sacrificing the spatial depth of the picture? The working out or explication of basic modes or modalities of visual perception and pictorial representation - loosely affixed to the abstracted scaffold of an only 'potential' object? A serious or tongue-in-cheek endeavor to relate painting to modern physics and its own fragmentation of natural appearances? The prove that pictures are in themselves systems of arbitrary signs, relying on the similitude of the image and its objects only incidentally in their production of meaning? - We will discuss these and other interpretations of cubism, examining their theoretical assumptions, their accuracy as well as their blind spots. The careful reading of texts and the thorough exploration of paintings will be the main method of the seminar which should serve, thus, not only as an introduction into cubism and its history of reception but into some techniques of reading and work analysis as well.
Aim: Strengthening of reading competence and ability to analyze pictorial representations/works of art.
Methods: Hermeneutics

Assessment and permitted materials

Independent induction into the subject of the seminar by help of the semester-apparat and the usual databases and the readiness to participate in the discussion in the seminar are required. This implies the preparations of all participants and for every seminar meeting. During the seminar the participants present and discuss a text with regard to a selection of relevant images. This presentation is prepared in small groups (2-3 People). Written seminar paper (c. 35-45.000 signs incl. blancs and footnotes, excl. appendices) to conclude the seminar.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Development of a coherent question and concise definitions of the paper’s subject; factually precise and terminologically correct analyses/description of the work(s) and accurate references to relevant literature; linguistically flawless form of expression/representation.
Since the literature is mainly in english, very good reading ability is required; as well as the readiness to cooperate in (small) groups also beyond the seminar times.
