Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The seminar focuses on Marcel Duchamp's first major work, the 'Large Glass'. The aim of the seminar is at first the exploration and immanent interpretation of this - structurally and in terms of content - highly complex work, to which numerous 'offshoots' in different media belong: In addition to the conglomeration of notes and drafts gathered in the 'Green Box' of 1934 and the 'White Box' of 1966, Duchamp's 'readymades' prove to be virtually satellites of the glass picture. The seminar thus leads into the history of the origin and interpretation of the 'Large Glass' and at the same time proposes a - in a broad sense - picture-theoretical framework for the interpretation of the 'Readymades'. The second half of the seminar will be devoted to central positions of Duchamp's reception, which we will read against the background of this interpretive framework.
