Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Istanbul, the modern metropolis on the Bosporus that spans two continents, was the capital of the Byzantine Empire for more than a thousand years, then known by the name of Constantinople. It was the largest and richest city in medieval Europe, and for its contemporaries, Byzantines and foreigners alike, it was an emblem of power and splendour. Even today it preserves the most valuable evidence for the study of Byzantine art and architecture. Based on remaining monuments as well as on archaeological findings and written sources, this course will provide a general overview of the infrastructure and profane and sacral buildings and their decoration from the 4th to the 15th century. Beginning with practical considerations of planning and construction, the course will convey in-depth knowledge about and an understanding of Byzantine art and architecture, and discuss these monuments in the wider context of medieval Europe, highlighting in particular certain innovative aspects.
