Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Through a combination of lectures, individual research, and interactive discussions, students will gain insights into the conceptual art movement's philosophical underpinnings, socio-political context, and its departure from traditional artistic practices. The course content will cover foundational principles of Conceptualism, including the prioritization of ideas over materiality, the influence of philosophy on artistic practices, and the movement's responses to contemporary social issues. The curriculum will cover pivotal artists, such as Sol LeWitt, Joseph Kosuth, Yoko Ono, and Mel Bochner, while also highlighting the often underrepresented work of women artists like Eva Hesse, Jenny Holzer, and Martha Rosler. The students will be assigned an artist to research and will be expected to prepare a presentation and a research paper.
