Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar attempts to approach the blurred concept of the Nachmoderne and the controversial position of painting after World War II by focusing on the work of three female painters of different generations: Maria Lassnig (1919-2014), Mary Heilmann (*1940), and Jutta Koether (*1958). In the work of all three, the relation of painting and body plays a crucial role. All three have challenged modern paradigms of the purity or specificity of the medium (C. Greenberg) as well as the formal autonomy of the image. Their works are defined by a sometimes affirmative, often critical and subversive engagement with the history of painting of the tradition and of modernism. After the often declared end of modern (or modernist) painting, they have found very different new resources in the seemingly exhausted medium. The seminar asks, among other things, whether this continuation of painting can also be described in gender-theoretical terms.
The focus of the work will be on work-analyses and an examination of the artists' texts. The historical context of their works will be important. The ability to analyze works in detail and the linguistic precision in the translation of visual observations are the essential skills to be developed.
