Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

At the beginning of the twentieth century architects such as Adolf Loos tried to differentiate between the social and cultural functions of architecture and art. Despite these attempts prominent architects contributed to the formation of or were influenced by different artistic styles and integrated in different manners artworks in their architecture and design works. The subject of the role of art in modern and post modern architecture and design is manifold and includes studying the design of modern art museums, architecture as "Gesamtkunstwerk," houses for art collectors, artists¿ studio-houses, displaying art as part of the façades and in the interiors of public buildings, presenting architectural plans as exhibition objects in museums and sculptural architecture. This course discusses the ethical and practical problems involved in and the success of the reciprocal relationship and the cross-over between art and architecture in the twentieth century.
