Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The series of lectures (cycles I-IV) give a survey of occidental arts. The first lecture presents the arts from the creation of Christianity to the closing of the High Middle Ages (the end of the Romanesque period). Those geographical areas, which show the most relevant stages of development, will become the center of examination. Recourses and continuities as well as developments representing the opposite point of view will be regarded with special emphasis.
The methods employed in the lectures are widely compiled, besides stylistic questions especially problems of iconography and iconology will be discussed (messages of the arts in their political and ecclesiastic-political context). The basic historic and dogmatic conditions which are important for the progression of the works will be taken into consideration.
