Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The exercise (in-depth) is dedicated to the category of "indigenous contemporary art" focusing not least on its ambivalences. The term and the practices associated with it mark tensions, for example, between self- and other-description or the emancipatory desire of marginalised communities on the one hand, and art as a source of profit for postcolonial nations on the other. Indigenous contemporary art can also be read as an ambivalent category of identity politics. Examples include the protests on the occasion of the Canadian exhibition The Spirit Sings (1988), contemporary "Sami art" which now has its own pavilion at the Venice Biennale or the transnational cooperation of Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner (Marshall Islands) and Aka Niviâna (Greenland) in the face of the consequences of the climate crisis on their home regions. Based on various examples, we discuss different concepts and forms of art in a transcultural context as well as questions of the postcolonial and the global in relation to the local. Further sessions are planned in special exhibitions at the Weltmuseum Wien. The dates will be agreed upon with the participants at the beginning of the exercise.
