Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course aims at scrutinizing ornamental patterns in early medieval art. While the main focus of classes will be on the rise, definition and historiography of the arabesque in early medieval Islamic art, the course will also explore the contemporary development of late antique art into Byzantine, Lombard, Carolingian and Insular artistic production. Sources that will be taken into consideration for explaining the development of ornament in early medieval art will be both the post-Hellenistic heritage from the Mediterranean area and Sasanian legacy in the Iranian lands. The seminars will be an exercise in learning and defining the various developments taken by ornamental patterns starting with the late antique period onwards. The course will touch upon other various topics that will help in offering a framework for a full understanding of the reception and transformation of the “Classical” language in the early medieval period, such as the reuse of spolia, proportions and calligraphy, and the reinterpretation of classical motifs.
