Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course aims at looking at the creation of a new aesthetic after the Islamic conquest of the Sasanian and (part of) the Byzantine Empire. Students will get acquainted with the main issues and problems posed by the rise of Islam in material culture production: religious art, figural art, new materials, new techniques, craftsmanship, new aesthetic. The course will elaborate on the meaning and patterns of artistic change after a military conquest and massive conversion to a new religion.

Participation, oral presentation, written essay.
