Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The course introduces students to the art-historical and codicological study of illustrated manuscripts dated to the 13th or 14th century and produced in West Asia or North Africa. It focuses on painting in scientific and fictional Arabic books. Their topics range from treatises on astronomic constellations, animals, medicinal plants, and potions to stories about humans and animals with primarily moral or literary subject matters. Through selected works, we will discuss visual and cultural relationships to illustrated Persian books and codices from Christian communities in the Middle East.Based on guided readings and short exercises, the first sessions will familiarize participants with fundamental questions and methods of research on illustrated manuscripts in Arabic script. Subsequently, students investigate scholarly literature dealing with concrete examples, present their first results in an oral presentation, and address a self-defined research question in their final essay. The main objectives of this course are practicing critical approaches to scholarly literature along with oral and written presentations of the student's research.
